Description:It is very difficult to research the history of this car, with so little to go on. What we do know is, HJ Mulliner produced 27 cars of different styles between 1956 and 1958 on S1 chassis, that included convertibles, 2-door coupes and only three 4-door sport saloons having “suicide” doors at the rear. I would like to quote you from a book written by a Johnny Green, titled 50 years of the marque, and I draw your attention to page 272 and I quote “if you own one of these HJ Mulliner special sports saloons on a standard S chassis, then you probably have one of three of such creatures” he goes on to say that he knows the whereabouts of 2 of them, one in America and one in the UK, and he adds, I do not know the whereabouts of the third vehicle. I have to assume that the vehicle we are offering for auction is the third car. I would suggest that prospective buyers conduct their own research to satisfy themselves. In what history we have, there are some odd bids which are quite interesting. There is a letter, dated 11.7.85 some 1 ¼ A 4 pages from the then owner who was facing bankruptcy in which he argues that the valuation on his car had been undervalued, because they had not taken into account, that she is one of only 3 made. We know that in 1976, incidentally the mileage then was only 44,135 and that the car was owned by Pembrook Studios Ltd. There is an MOT inspection report, dated October ’87 showing the mileage of 57.454. The vendor has owned this car for 4 years and apparently has others, and he intended to restore her, but he has now decided that he would never get round to doing it. He does say, that he has had the engine running, but I have not heard it, The visual inspection of the body work, which is all aluminium, shows a very straight, unmolested vehicle and we are very pleased to be able to offer this rare car for auction. Sold as a non running restoration project. Rear bumpers and air cleaners are in the car. A logbook has been applied for by the owner and is to follow. AMENDMENT: It is possible that this vehicle is not 1 of 3 as publicised. It is up to you, the purchaser, to make your own judgement.
